How could you process an image to get the zdepth by means of some kind of filter, without manually painting it?

i wonder what the process is - makes these in 3d on a computer, depth-map render, then paint on canvas? hmm...

I love these. They are like 2D porcelain, only not to be found in your grandma's house. I've always liked the effect you get when you turn dither off when saving a gif. I guess the artist felt the same. But these are just awesome; especially the feelings of depth they provoke. They allude to the sort of graphics that would be used to create a 3D Steriogram, or like a quick render in 3DS max. Hand painted though, I take my hat off (or I would if I had one) to the artist. Anyway, guns, knives, short skirts, kinky poses, my kind of art!

According to <a href="http://www.todayandtomorrow.net/2009/09/09/kazuki-takamatsu/" rel="nofollow">Today and Tomorrow</a>, the medium for these hand-painted works is gouache. Amazing!
